Oppenheimer Throws BC Into Horn Mix
G1 Epsom Derby and G1 Coral-Eclipse S. victor Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), who bounced back from a first defeat in the G1 Juddmonte International to take Leopardstown’s G1 Irish Champion S. Saturday, could have two more runs this year, according to owner/breeder Anthony Oppenheimer. While the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Oct. 4 and the G1 Champion S. Oct. 17 look the likely targets, Oppenheimer did not rule out a trip to Keeneland for the G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Oct. 31.
“The picture as I see it is there are three possible races for him and I think we have to have decent ground,” Oppenheimer said. “We can’t really give others the advantage. We might get good ground for the Arc, or maybe at Ascot or there is Kentucky to consider. The ideal scenario is we get good to firm ground at either Ascot or Longchamp as, while he is a good traveler, it is a long way to go to America.”
Oppenheimer said Golden Horn took his first visit outside his birth country in stride.
“He traveled to Ireland and back by plane for the first time and I think he rather enjoyed it,” he said. “When he came home he was quite sleepy, but very happy.”
